How does God prepare us to deal with addictions?
We all have addictions. They are not just sin struggles. Addiction is any unhealthy habit or action that is repeated. Whether it is daily, weekly, or monthly… if you go back to something that is dishonoring to God that is an addiction.
But each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desire. Then desire when it has conceived gives birth to sin, and sin when it is fully grown brings forth death.
The progression the Bible describes is desire, sin, death. Your desire will lead to death if not checked, corrected, or stopped.
How addictions form.
No one wakes up one day and says I’m going to become a sex addict. Let’s look at how addictions develop.
On our own we have no power over sin. Apart from God, we are not just trapped in this life, but also the life to come.
How to get free.
God saw us in our helpless state, and he sent Jesus. God in flesh. The only begotten, who lived a sinless life, died in our place, was crucified between two criminals, and on the third day he rose again. And when he rose, we were set free from sin. And the sins that previously defined us were laid upon Christ. Jesus took them upon himself.
The cross no longer stands in Jerusalem. Jesus has been raised from the dead. We have been raised with him and are no longer slaves to sin. That is how we are freed from addiction.
How to stay free.
What if you still feel attraction to those addictions after you come to Christ?
3 most powerful gifts God has given us to battle addiction:
- The people of God
- The Word of God
- The Spirit of God
The People of God
Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working.
God’s power is sufficient for our freedom, and he has instructed us how to find it. Confession allows us to bring our sin out into the light. It is to bring healing!
But exhort one another every day, as long as it is called “today,” that none of you may be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin.
We need to be reminded and to remind each other daily of the goodness of the gospel or we will be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin.
The Word of God
The Word of God will transform your mind and renew your appetites. There is a supernatural element to the word of God that will guard and guide you.
I have stored up your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you.
The Spirit of God
But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.
Walk all day everyday with God, and he will keep you from the desires of the flesh.
We all struggle with addictions and they all lead to death.
Jesus set us free.
The people of God, the Word of God, and the Spirit of God allow us to walk in that freedom.
